If you’re a bit of a perfectionist and you’ve just started learning about internet marketing one thing that will be key to achieving success will be managing your perfectionist tendencies. It’s great to want to produce the best work that you can but beginners can often find themselves not making the progress they want simply because they want everything to be perfect.
Here are some of the issues that you may need to think about
Take action
In order to understand what internet marketing is all about you have to do a lot of reading, but there’s no point in keep reading and keep reading and not taking any action. Although you may worry you don’t know enough, those feelings will always be there – so you have to control them and at some point stop reading and start doing.
“Too many people spend too much time trying to perfect something before they actually do it. Instead of waiting for perfection, run with what you go, and fix it along the way…”
Paul Arden
Control your fear of failure
I was talking to someone recently who’s new to internet marketing and they told me that they hadn’t actually started building a website because they were afraid of failure. I could understand a bit of what they felt because most of us want to do things well. However, their fear of failure and their need to do everything perfectly was actually stopping them from doing anything at all.
You have to be able to handle failure with internet marketing as you learn what works and what doesn’t. Take the risk
Focus on the need of visitors and customers
Trying to be perfect is an impossible idea and no two people would probably even have an idea of what perfect means. So when you’re working on you’re website, writing blogs or articles or reviewing products – make sure that you stay focused on the needs of your visitors and customers rather than your own tastes.
Accept that good is sometimes good enough
If you have a tendency towards perfectionism, the chances are you’re never quite satisfied with what you do. I relate to that when I write articles. When I first started article writing, I would write them over and over again and even when I posted them I was never happy. However, I’ve had to learn to control those feelings and only allow myself to do 2 edits of an article before I publish. I still find that I always think an article could have been better, but at least I’m not burning myself out keep rewriting.
Striving for excellence motivates you; striving for perfection is demoralizing.
Harriet Braiker
Celebrate your success
As well as being an internet marketer I’m also a confidence coach and I think it’s really important that you celebrate your success and recognise both the progress you’ve made and your achievements at different stages. Shut out any inner voice that hints you could have done more and just enjoy the moment.
Final note
There’s nothing wrong in striving to produce the best work you can, but don’t let any perfectionist tendencies stop you from taking action or achieving success.
